The stub sill design is easily recognizable as it has no solid underframe spanning the length of the car, instead the bolsters are attached directly to the tank. The stub sill design is often referred to as the “modern tank car design” because from the 1970s onward majority of general-purpose tank cars were constructed with stub sill design.
